“Who can guarantee that regional elections through the DPRD can eliminate money politics? The potential for money politics just by changing places is very open,” said Renanda when contacted, Tuesday (23/12).
According to him, his party’s position on direct regional elections is clear. The Democratic Party, he said, had rejected indirect regional elections in 2014 when Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) was general chairman.
At that time, SBY, who also served as President, issued a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) to annul the indirect regional election regulations passed by the DPR through Law Number 22 of 2014 concerning the Election of Governors, Regents and Mayors.
“The Democrats’ position is clear on this. We rejected it in 2014,” said Renanda.
Renanda said her party does not want democracy to go backwards.According to him, the people’s political right to choose their leaders is a good thing and does not need to be taken away because of momentary political interests.
Even though the political situation is currently starting to warm up, Renanda believes that the political situation must remain conducive.According to him, unpopular ideas should not disturb the peace of society.
“Currently, political conduciveness is approaching the warm threshold. Let’s make sure it becomes more conducive,” he said.
The discourse on regional elections being returned through the DPRD resumed after Golkar held a National Leadership Meeting (Rapimnas) last weekend.
One of the Rapimnas recommendations is that Golakr encourage indirect regional elections or via the DPRD and permanent coalitions.
Golkar General Chair Bahlil Lahadalia said the recommendation was submitted as a form of implementing people’s sovereignty, while still emphasizing public involvement and participation in the implementation process.
“The Golkar Party proposes regional head elections through the Regional People’s Representative Council,” said Bahlil at the Golkar National Meeting.
Apart from Golkar, this discourse is supported by Gerindra, PAN and PKB.Meanwhile, PDIP firmly rejects it, PKS proposes variations, and NasDem has not yet raised its voice.
