Conflict in this African country has been going on since 1996, causing around six million deaths. The First Congo War (1996-1997) began after the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, the Council on Foreign Relations website (cfr.org) reported.
In 1998, the Second Congo War broke out following worsening relations between Congo and Rwanda. This gave rise to many paramilitary groups.
One of the most prominent rebel groups to emerge in the early 2000s was the March 23 Movement (M23), which was largely composed of ethnic Tutsis.
Between 2012 and 2013, M23 became the undisputed force in eastern Congo, and Kinshasa (Congo) accused Kigali (Rwanda) of supporting the group.
Threat of Deforestation
Outside of war, Congo, as the owner of the second largest tropical rainforest in the world (Congo Basin) after the Amazon, is also facing massive deforestation.
Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (nicfi) page The Congo Basin includes the mighty Congo river system, this forest is filled with many unique species of animals and plants.Protecting these forests is critical to preventing global warming.
The Congo Basin Forest has an area the size of India or almost ten times the size of Germany, covering 3.3 million km2.Almost two-thirds of the forest is in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These forests provide food, firewood, water, and shelter.
What is no less important is the size of the peatland. This thick, carbon-rich layer of organic soil has accumulated over millions of years across the region.
There are more than 10,000 plant species, including 3,000 species found only here: 600 tree species, 1000 bird species, 900 butterfly species, 280 reptile species and 400 mammal species.
But Deforestation in the Congo Basin is changing rapidly.By 2022, for example, 15,603 km2 of tree-covered area will be lost, according to the latest satellite data. This is equivalent to nearly 8,000 football pitches of forest being cut down every day.
