This new discovery increases the total proven gold reserves in Laizhou to more than 3,900 tons or the equivalent of around 137 million ounces of gold.
This figure accounts for around 26 percent of China’s total national gold reserves, making Laizhou the region with the largest gold reserves and production in the entire country.

Even so, the authorities have not revealed the exact size of the underwater gold reserves.Last November, the government announced the discovery of a super-large, low-grade gold deposit of 1,444 tons in Liaoning Province, northeastern China.
China’s Ministry of Natural Resources calls it the largest single reserve discovered since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Meanwhile, in the Kunlun Mountains, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local authorities also reported the discovery of gold reserves of more than 1,000 tons.
With these major discoveries, China’s position as the largest gold ore producer in the world has become stronger.
China’s gold production reaches around 377 tons per year, although in terms of national gold reserves, this country is still behind South Africa and Australia.
