“There are a number of workers who are desperate. So, they are desperate to find work. This means that here they cannot get a job. From 2019 to 2024, in 2024 there will be 2.7 million people, and the majority of that comes of course from elementary school or did not graduate from elementary school, but what we want to convey here is that middle school, high school, and graduate, diploma and postgraduate degrees are also increasing,” said Zamroni in the 2026 Economic Outlook Seminar at the BRIN Office, South Jakarta, as quoted

, Friday (19/12).
Overall, the number of job seekers in Indonesia is also increasing.
In the 2019 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) the number of job seekers was 7.8 million people, while in 2024 the number will increase to 11.7 million people.
Most job seekers were high school graduates with a percentage of 29.46 percent, 25.04 percent were vocational school graduates, and 17.18 percent were elementary school graduates or had not graduated from elementary school.Meanwhile, job seekers from the S1 graduate category are 11 percent.
“The number of job seekers is increasing rapidly. And where are they coming from? Most of them actually come from high school. Then S1. This means that graduates are one of the contributors to job seekers in Indonesia,” he said.
Looking at this data, Zamroni assesses that the Indonesian economy has structural problems. In this case, labor cannot be absorbed optimally.Apart from that, many job seekers are also drawn into the information sector which is not protected by social security.
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the unemployment rate in Indonesia was 7.46 million people as of August 2025, down 4,000 people compared to August last year (yoy).
BPS Deputy for Accounts and Statistical Analysis Moh Edy Mahmud said the working age population currently stands at 218.17 million people. This number increased by 2.80 million people compared to last August 2024.
The working age population is divided into two groups, namely 154 million who are in the labor force and 64.17 million other people who are not in the labor force.
