“Now, there are more weapons in Australia than at the time of the Port Arthur incident. We cannot allow this to continue,” Albanese said on Friday (19/12), quoted by Al Jazeera.
Furthermore, Albanese said that currently more than four million weapons are in Australia.
The PM also said the authorities would purchase excess weapons from owners, new prohibited weapons and illegal weapons.
“Non-citizens don’t need to own guns. And someone in suburban Sydney doesn’t need to own six guns. The horrific events in Bondi show we need to remove more guns from our streets,” he said.
Albanese then detailed the scheme.Later, state authorities will collect the weapons and process payment for their return.
The Australian Police will then be tasked with destroying the weapons that have been collected.
“We suspect hundreds of thousands of weapons will be collected and destroyed under this scheme,” said the Australian PM.
Last week, another brutal shooting rocked Australia, specifically in Sydney. As a result of this incident, 15 people died.
The incident was reminiscent of the shooting tragedy in Port Arthur.Tasmania, in 1996. As a result of that incident, 35 people died.
In the weeks following the shooting, Australia banned automatic and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, introduced a nationwide firearms buyback program, and implemented a 28-day waiting period for gun purchases.
