APBI-ICMA General Chair Priyadi said that the projection shows that coal is still a mainstay energy source in the short-medium term for a number of countries.
The association projects that demand in markets such as China and India will remain stable and strong.This is driven by the need for energy for industrial recovery and economic growth, although demand is gradually decreasing.

The opportunity for significant demand growth comes from Southeast Asian markets, such as Vietnam and the Philippines.
“In the midst of these export opportunities, the commitment of APBI-ICMA members to fulfill Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) obligations has not changed. Fulfilling coal supplies for domestic needs, especially the electricity sector, remains a priority to maintain national energy security,” said Priyadi at the Editor’s Gathering event in Jakarta, Thursday (27/11).
For Indonesia, this year, coal exports are targeted to reach 500 million tons.Until October 2025, Indonesia’s coal export realization reached 418 million tons or the equivalent of 83.6 percent of the annual export target.
The three largest export destination countries are China (161 million tonnes), India (89.17 million tonnes) and the Philippines (32.51 million tonnes).
In terms of production, until October 2025, Indonesia’s coal production will reach 661.18 million tons or 89.38 percent of this year’s production target, 739.6 million tons.
Priyadi emphasized that the weakening of international coal prices, accompanied by increasing production and logistics costs, demands policies that are more adaptive, measurable, and can maintain long-term investment sustainability.
In this case, it is necessary to synchronize government strategic policies in order to maintain the sustainability of operations and competitiveness of business actors.
