Donald Trump
signed an executive order to establish a number of branches of Muslim organizations
Muslim Brotherhood
as a foreign terrorist group, Monday (24/11).
The order specifically targets the Muslim Brotherhood’s branches in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.

“The branches engaged in or facilitated and supported violence and destabilization campaigns that endangered their own territories, United States citizens, and United States interests,” the order was quoted as saying.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a pan-Islamist organization that was founded in Egypt in 1928 and then developed and expanded to various countries in the Arab world.
The founder, an Egyptian teacher named Hassan Al Banna, believed that reviving Islamic principles in society could strengthen the Muslim world in the face of Western colonialism.
Meanwhile, the US step in designating a group as a foreign “terrorist” organization allows Washington to take punitive steps, such as freezing any assets the group may have in Uncle Sam’s country and denying entry to its members.
Now Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are tasked with completing the process of banning the branches mentioned in the presidential order.
The Muslim Brotherhood has previously been banned as a terrorist group in a number of countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.Last April, Jordan also banned the group.
The Amman government accuses the group of producing and stockpiling weapons and planning destabilization efforts against the kingdom.
The Muslim Brotherhood is quite popular in Jordan and previously continued to operate even though the country’s highest court ruled in 2020 to disband it.Local authorities often tolerated the group’s activities for years.
In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood has been banned since 2013, following the overthrow of then-leader and president, Mohamed Morsi, in a military coup led by then-army chief Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.
Since then, Sisi has led Egypt and built an important alliance with Washington.
In May this year, French President Emmanuel Macron ordered his government to draw up proposals to respond to the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and the spread of political Islam in the country.
