.
The amendments to the Criminal Code proposed by the extreme right-wing National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, were approved with 39 votes to 16 out of a total of 120 Knesset members on Monday (10/11).This indicates that the proposal has the support of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

According to the draft text reported
The Times of Israel,
The death penalty will be imposed on individuals who kill Israeli citizens with “racialist” motives and “with the aim of harming the State of Israel and the revival of the Jewish nation in its land.”
Critics say the quote makes it clear that practically the death penalty would only be applied to Palestinians who kill Jews. This law also does not apply to Jewish extremists who attack Palestinians.
Meanwhile, currently more than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are still being held in Israeli prisons.
Attempts to propose similar bills have failed several times in the past. This bill still has to pass second and third readings before it officially becomes law.
In its statement, the National Security Committee, which also included an explanatory note to the bill, argued that this regulation was proposed in order to “eradicate terrorism from its roots and create a strong deterrent effect.”

, Ben-Gvir welcomed the results of the vote on social media and declared that his party, Jewish Power, was “making history.”
Meanwhile, in a statement, the human rights monitoring group, Amnesty International, condemned the bill, which it said deliberately targets Palestinians.
“There is no way to sugarcoat this; a majority of Israel’s 39 Knesset members have approved on first reading a bill that effectively requires courts to impose the death penalty only on Palestinians,” said Amnesty’s senior director for research, advocacy, policy and campaigns, Erika Guevara Rosas.
Rosas emphasized that the death penalty “should not be applied under any circumstances, let alone used as a state-sanctioned discriminatory tool to kill, dominate and oppress.”
Although the death penalty is still listed for a small number of crimes in Israel, the country has in practice become a state
de facto abolitionist
.Nazi Holocaust perpetrator Adolf Eichmann was the last person executed in Israel in 1962.
The vote on the bill came amid a United States-brokered ceasefire that took effect last month, with the aim of ending Israel’s war on Gaza.
Israel is accused of violating the ceasefire through ongoing attacks in Gaza.Jewish settlers and the Israeli military also routinely carry out deadly attacks throughout the occupied West Bank.
Israel argued that Hamas violated the terms of the ceasefire and remained a threat to its military in Gaza. However, Tel Aviv never disclosed evidence of this violation.
