Ulama figure from Bangkalan, Madura,
Shaykhona Muhammad Kholil
officially appointed by President Prabowo Subianto as
national hero
at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday (10/11).
The designation of Syaikhona Kholil as a national hero coincides with the commemoration of Heroes’ Day.
The name Syaikhona Kholil has been proposed as a national hero five years ago.

It is considered to be the node of the Indonesian Islamic movement and the strengthening of nationalism in the 1800s.
Syaikhona Kholil is considered to have contributed to the nationalist movement by actively empowering the community in the fields of religion, education, social and political affairs.
This then became the main trigger for the students to raise political awareness and Islamic networks, which later became the embryo for the birth of a cultural movement to fight colonialism in the archipelago.
“Syaikhona Kholil became the central point for forging and nurturing future fighters and heroes. This is undeniable in historical facts,” said the Head of the Syaikhona Kholil Academic and Biographical Study Team, Dr Muhaimin, in Surabaya, on March 22 2021.
Almost all of the students trained by Syaikhona Kholil became fighters.Some of them are KH Hasyim Asy’ari, KH Wahab Hasbullah and KH Bisri Syamsuri.Based on Syaikhona Kholil’s thoughts and his blessing, the three then founded Nahdlatul Ulama.The first two names have also been declared national heroes.
“It was the alumni students taught by Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan who translated the teacher’s thoughts and movements,” he said.
One of the suggestions for the title of national hero for Syaikhona Kholil was also put forward by the National Democratic Party (NasDem).NasDem wants the government to give awards to these hero teachers.
Chairman of the Religion & Indigenous Peoples Division of the NasDem Party DPP, Hasan Aminuddin, said that the proposal for the title of hero for Syaikhona Kholil was initiated by NasDem 10 years ago.As Surya Paloh wishes.
“Pak Surya said, it’s time for us to elevate this deceased, Mas Hasan. We will fight for [Syaikhona Kholil] to become a national hero,” said Hasan, said the former Regent of Probolinggo.
Through its representatives in the DPR RI and MPR RI, NasDem has officially proposed the name Syaikhona Kholil to the Ministry of Social Affairs to immediately receive the title of hero.This has been done since 2019.
“Based on quite strong aspirations, and history proves, that Syaikhona Kholil is the teacher of heroes and the teacher of saints,” he said.
History, he said, has proven that quite a few kiai and caretakers of Islamic boarding schools in East Java and Central Java are Syaikhona Kholil students.
