The reason, he said, is that Indonesia is still in an atmosphere of grief due to sporadic floods and landslides that hit three provinces in Sumatra at the end of last November.

“What is clear from Headquarters is that we have not given permission for the fireworks celebrations which are usually held at the end of the year,” said National Police Chief General Pol.Listyo Sigit Prabowo at Pasar Senen Station, Jakarta, Tuesday (23/12).
The National Police Chief handed over technical matters regarding raids and sanctions for New Year’s fireworks celebrations to the regional police (Polda) of each region.
“We do not provide recommendations for the use of year-end fireworks because we know that everyone is currently facing a situation where we feel the same spiritual atmosphere, and we are together praying for our brothers and sisters who are currently affected by the disaster in Sumatra,” he said.
He then appealed to the public to take advantage of the New Year celebrations with useful activities, such as praying for people affected by the Sumatran disaster.
“Of course, we urge the public to use more of their activities for prayer for Sumatra, prayer for the country,” he said.
He hopes that the public can understand the reasons for not issuing permits to use fireworks and can feel the spiritual atmosphere of the people affected by the disaster.
“Because we know the current situation, everyone is facing a situation that we hope we feel the same spiritual atmosphere,” said the four-star general of the National Police.
Furthermore, Listyo said that later the regional police would give advice to each relevant region that there should be no fireworks during New Year 2026.
He explained that the police had deployed 234,000 personnel who would be assigned to service posts, security posts and integrated posts during the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 (Nataru) periods.
For the integrated post itself, he said, it contains the institutions needed for Christmas service, such as the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) and the TNI.
“So that then the activities can be integrated and synergistic in dealing with existing problems,” said Listyo.
