Tito admitted that there were still shortcomings and weaknesses in handling flood and landslide disasters in the Sumatra region.Difficult terrain and technical limitations in the field are the main challenges in the process of emergency management and post-disaster recovery.
This statement was made in response to public dissatisfaction with the government’s performance which was considered not optimal, including the raising of white flags by victims of the flood and landslide disaster in Aceh as a symbol of despair.
Tito apologized to the public if the government’s efforts so far have not fully met expectations.
However, he emphasized that the government continues to make continuous performance improvements to speed up meeting the emergency needs of disaster victims.
“With all humility, we apologize if there are still shortcomings. The obstacles in the field are quite large due to the difficult terrain. However, as a government, we are obliged to continue working, overcome obstacles, improve performance, and move quickly to meet the emergency needs of our brothers and sisters in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra,” he said.
Tito emphasized that disaster victims currently need solidity and solidarity from all elements, both government and society.
According to him, the spirit of mutual cooperation and humanity is the main key in the recovery process of affected areas.
“The community’s helping hand is very helpful. We would like to thank all parties who have contributed. Let’s continue together within the framework of national and humanitarian solidarity to speed up recovery,” said Tito.
Based on the latest data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as of December 19 2025, the number of victims who died due to flash floods and landslides in the Sumatra region reached 1,068 people.
Meanwhile, the number of victims who are still declared missing is recorded at around 190 people, and the number of refugees has reached around 577,600 people spread across a number of affected areas in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.
