Trump’s move was taken after two US soldiers and one US civilian were killed in an ISIS attack in Syria on Saturday (13/12).Syrian authorities said the perpetrator was a member of the security forces who was about to be fired for espousing extremist Islamic values.
This prohibition applies to citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Syria and those holding passports issued by the Palestinian Authority. The ban also applies to citizens of Laos in Southeast Asia as well as to Sierra Leone, which was previously only subject to partial restrictions.
The Trump administration has previously informally banned travel for Palestinian Authority passport holders as a show of solidarity with Israel.
Apart from these countries, Trump also imposed a partial ban on citizens from other African countries, including Nigeria, as well as Caribbean countries which are currently in the reach of US anti-drug operations.
In recent weeks, Trump has voiced his displeasure with Africa and its people. He called the country “slum”.
Trump even called Somalis “trash” after a scandal emerged about US citizens of Somali descent allegedly cheating the government out of money through fictitious contracts in Minnesota.
Prior to this, Trump had banned citizens from Somalia from entering the US.
Other countries that are also under the full US travel ban include Afghanistan, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Sudan and Yemen.
