The replica is approximately 114 feet tall and is one of a number of similar statues placed in front of Havanese shops throughout Brazil.
According to local reports, company officials said only the top of the statue, about 24 meters high, was affected by the collapse.Meanwhile, the 11 meter high base remains intact.
The company said barriers were immediately installed in the area to protect customers and employees, and special teams were deployed to clear the debris within hours.
The mayor of Guaiba, Marcelo Maranata, also said there were no casualties and praised the quick response at the scene.
He added local teams were working with state Civil Defense officials to secure the area and check for other possible damage nearby.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m., when the storm was at its peak and weather authorities recorded wind speeds in the region exceeding 90 km per hour.
The local Civil Defense previously issued a severe weather warning for the metropolitan area.
They reminded residents of the risk of strong winds and heavy rain via emergency messages sent directly to mobile phones.
The supermarket continues to operate in unaffected areas, although access to the area around the collapsed statue remains restricted.
Havan in his statement confirmed the statue had been standing since the store opened in 2020 and had the necessary technical certification.
They also said a technical inspection would be carried out to determine the exact cause of the statue’s collapse and assess whether other factors besides extreme weather played a role.
The storm in Guaiba also affected much of Rio Grande do Sul.
Other areas reported hail, roof damage, fallen trees and temporary power outages.Apart from that, several roads were also flooded due to heavy rain.
The National Institute of Meteorology kept a hurricane warning in effect, with wind gusts of up to 100 km per hour.
Meteorologists said the strong and sudden winds were caused by the arrival of a cold front.
Weather conditions are expected to improve starting Tuesday (16/12), although rain may still continue.
