President
Prabowo Subianto
said he was considering the idea of Golkar General Chair Bahlil Lahadalia regarding regional head elections (
regional elections
) carried out by the Regional People’s Representative Council (
DPRD
).
This proposal emerged in response to the high political costs in Indonesia due to implementing direct elections.Prabowo then highlighted that this kind of ‘representative democracy’ practice is also implemented in a number of countries.
“If you have already chosen the Regency DPRD, Provincial DPRD, why not just immediately elect the governor and regent? That’s it,” said Prabowo when delivering a speech at the peak event of the Golkar Party’s 61st anniversary at Istora Senayan, Friday (5/12).

“It was implemented by Malaysia, it was implemented by India, it was implemented by many countries. England, Canada, Australia, the richest countries in the world use a cheap political system,” he continued.
Prabowo also suggested that Indonesian politics should be characterized by the principle of mutual cooperation after the election process is complete.
“Once again I convey my belief that Indonesian democratic politics must be characterized by: competition while competing, once competing, united, compact, mutual cooperation, cooperation,” he said.
At the same event, Bahlil also voiced the same thing. He believes that it is better for regional heads to be elected through the legislature or by the DPRD.
“One year ago we said that regional election decisions were chosen only through the DPRD. There are many pros and cons, but after we studied it, it would be better if we did it according to the election through the DPR or second level DPRD. So we don’t have any more headaches,” said Bahlil.
He emphasized the importance of Indonesia finding the right formula for its democratic system.Democracy in Indonesia needs to be designed to minimize political costs.
“We also have to find the best way for our democracy. What the Golkar Party has said many times, we have to consider it carefully. Democracy has to reduce too many money games. We have to minimize political costs for democracy. So that in the future our politics will not be determined only by people with money,” concluded Bahlil.
