“The total temporary loss reached Rp. 922.2 billion,” said Head of the UPTD for Food Crop Protection, Horticulture and Food Safety Quality Supervision at the Ketapang TPH Service, North Sumatra Province, Marino, Thursday (4/12).
Marino said that rice commodities experienced the largest loss, reaching IDR 637.25 billion. The most significant damage occurred to rice plants spread across 14 districts/cities with a total of 33,049 hectares (ha) of affected land, while puso land reached 3,878 ha.
As a result, North Sumatra lost production of 98,038.73 tons of harvested dry grain.
“Damage to rice occurred in Mandailing Natal Regency which was recorded as the area with the largest impact, with land affected covering an area of 4,025.23 ha, puso 3,459 ha, loss of yield of 19,869.51 tons, and loss value reaching IDR 129.15 billion,” he explained.
Then South Tapanuli experienced major losses with 843.75 ha of land affected, 299.50 ha of puso, 3,035.16 tonnes of yield loss, and a loss value of IDR 19.72 billion.
Meanwhile, Padangsidimpuan City recorded 2.51 hectares of land affected, Puso 1.25 hectares, a loss of 14.76 tonnes of produce, with losses reaching IDR 96.47 million.
“The city of Medan also experienced impacts reaching 281 ha of land and a loss of 796.94 tons of produce, causing a loss of around IDR 4.84 billion. Pakpak Bharat Regency recorded 66.09 ha of land affected, but without puso and no loss value,” he explained.
Furthermore, in Deliserdang 12,231.15 ha of land was affected, the yield loss was 32,471.87 tons, and the value of the loss reached IDR 211.06 billion.
Langkat Regency recorded 665.91 ha of affected land, a loss of 17,586.39 tonnes of produce, with a loss value of IDR 114.28 billion. In Binjai City, yield losses reached 109.16 tons, causing losses of around IDR 690 million.
“North Tapanuli was also significantly affected with 261.35 ha of land affected, Puso 119 ha, a yield loss of 1,896.19 tonnes, and a loss of IDR 12.34 billion. Meanwhile, Serdangbedagai recorded 7,882.48 ha of affected land, a yield loss of 20,906.28 tonnes, with a total loss of IDR 141.86 billion,” he explained.
He mentioned that several other areas such as Tebing Tinggi and Simalungun recorded affected land, but without puso and without loss value.Batubara Regency reported a loss of 2,518.17 tons with a loss value of IDR 14.43 billion.Meanwhile, Asahan recorded a loss of IDR 27.83 billion from a loss of 4,334.59 tons of produce.
“Overall, the impact of flooding on rice crops in North Sumatra is very large, both in terms of land area, production and economic value. It is hoped that the regional government can immediately take recovery steps and support the affected farmers,” he explained.
According to Marino, rice crops are currently still in a flooded condition so farmers will definitely fail to harvest. Therefore, to ease the burden on rice farmers, the North Sumatra TPH Ketapang Service has prepared 40 thousand hectares of rice seeds.
“This means that we see that after 1 week the rice plants are still submerged, most likely it will be Puso, which means farmers will fail to harvest. The Ministry has prepared rice seeds to be planted on 40 thousand ha of land in North Sumatra. This means that there are 1000 tons that will be distributed to farmers in North Sumatra who are affected by the flood,” he concluded.
Not only rice, Marino added that 604.30 hectares of corn plants were also affected by floods and landslides, with 309.60 hectares lost, yield loss of 2,836.53 tons and total losses reaching 14.749 billion.
“The corn fields that were damaged were spread across the districts of Mandailing Natal, South Tapanuli, Langkat, North Tapanuli and Serdangbedagai. Then the cassava fields currently are only Serdangbedagai which reported losses of up to IDR 65 million with 65 ha of land, and a yield loss of 1,538 tonnes,” he concluded.
Furthermore, chili land in North Sumatra was also affected with a total loss of IDR 188 billion. It was recorded that 600.91 ha were damaged in Batubara, North Tapanuli, Karo, Langkat, Mandailing Natal, South Tapanuli with 2,350 tons of yield loss and 7.70 ha in puso.
“To anticipate this problem, various efforts will be made, namely restoring tertiary irrigation networks in heavily affected areas, providing seeds and production facilities for farmers to replant, daily monitoring to update data on damage and needs in the field, and cross-agency coordination to accelerate agricultural recovery,” he explained.
