“We don’t know who we are looking for yet,” said Rhode Island State Attorney General, Peter F. Neronha, in a press conference on Tuesday (16/12) local time.
The latest CCTV video shared by law enforcement officials shows a chronology of the movements of a man wearing a dark coat and face mask.He was seen walking around monitoring neighborhoods near the campus on Saturday morning, hours before carrying out his shooting in the afternoon.
The full-bodied man’s face remained covered in all the CCTV videos obtained, making it difficult to identify him.
“Pay attention to his body movements, the way he swings his arms, his posture, and how he carries his weight. I think these movement patterns are important and can help identify the individual.”
Footage shows the alleged perpetrator walking in a neighborhood near campus as early as 10.30am on the day of the shooting, which occurred around 4pm on Saturday in an engineering building on campus. Two students died and nine others were injured,” Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez was quoted as saying
New York Times
.
“We believe he was actually surveying the area, something criminals typically do,” Perez said.He asked residents to review footage from at least the previous week, in the hope that the perpetrator had been in the neighborhood before the shooting and might have shown his face.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also shared a compilation of similar video footage, most of it from home security cameras around campus. The images show a man walking, pacing and sometimes running on residential streets, both before and immediately after the shooting. In some recordings, the man is seen carrying a sling bag, while in other recordings he is not.
Despite not having any concrete leads, officials still expressed confidence that they would eventually catch the perpetrator. They also sought to reassure the anxiety-ridden Providence community, as well as anyone still on Brown’s now nearly empty campus.
The campus even canceled the final exam period as a result of this incident, and most students have left campus for winter vacation.
“Once we identify who this person is, I’m confident we will be able to find him,” Neronha said.
“It’s very difficult to hide in this country.”
On the day of the shooting, the perpetrator entered the Barus and Holley building on campus. The perpetrator attacked a classroom in a relatively old part of the building where there are fewer cameras.None recorded the attack or the alleged perpetrator.
“This building is on the edge of the Brown campus. The shooting location was at the end of the building.”There is no footage depicting this individual, that would be useful in identifying him, that we have not released to the public,” Neronha said.
Law enforcement officials also said there was no indication that other parties were involved in the attack.
Police detained a man who was suspected of being the suspect on Sunday (14/12), but was later released.Authorities said the man was not connected to the crime.
Meanwhile, the two shooting victims, namely Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, were 18 years old and came from Virginia. His family immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2011.
Meanwhile, Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama, is known as a talented pianist and is vice president of the university’s Republican Party Club.
Responding to questions from journalists, Police Chief Perez said investigators so far had no evidence that Cook was the target of the perpetrator, despite speculation in some right-wing circles.
Brown University has not released the identities of the other nine students who were injured. However, according to the university’s health department, two of them have been discharged from hospital, while most of the others are in critical but stable condition.
