in a number of areas in North Sumatra. Some of them couldn’t even operate because they were submerged up to an adult’s waist level.
“Therefore, to reach isolated areas, the North Sumatra Provincial Government received assistance from volunteers from various provinces, communities and community organizations. We directed all volunteers to coordinate with the district health office,” said Secretary of the North Sumatra Health Service, Hamid Rizal Lubis, Saturday (6/12).

According to Hamid, a number of diseases have the potential to infect residents after a disaster, such as skin disorders, diarrhea, ISPA and fever. Therefore, he asked the district/city government to immediately inventory the need for medicines and consumable medical materials.
“To meet these needs, we are coordinating with the Ministry of Health. We are also asking district/city health offices to collect data on affected health facilities and infrastructure for us to compile and report to the center,” he explained.
Hamid hopes that all of these cross-sector efforts can ensure that health services for disaster victims in North Sumatra continue optimally until the community’s condition recovers.
Medical personnel have been alerted at various posts and evacuation points to provide direct services to affected communities.
To date, the North Sumatra Health Office has treated 1,890 lightly injured victims and 94 seriously injured victims in affected areas such as Central Tapanuli, Sibolga, South Tapanuli and Langkat.
Temporary data shows that 41,950 residents were displaced, 167 people are still missing, and 313 people died as a result of the disaster that hit North Sumatra in the last week.
“Since the disaster first occurred, we immediately coordinated with the affected district/city health services to carry out health efforts for the community at the disaster location,” said Hamid.
Hamid added that the North Sumatra Provincial Government is also collaborating with the Health Crisis Center of the Sumatra Regional Ministry of Health. For the Tapteng and Sibolga areas, Hamid explained that the small team sent was stuck in Tapsel because road access was cut off.
In Langkat Regency, the North Sumatra Health Office also deployed a complete medical team and rotated officers between sub-districts so that health services remained optimal. This effort was carried out in conjunction with the collaboration of the district government, central government and various parties in disaster management.
“In the post-disaster phase, various health problems will arise. Therefore, prevention efforts are very important so that we can treat diseases as early as possible,” explained Hamid.
