Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan (
Zulhas
) responded to criticism of him regarding the damage to the National Park
Tesso Nilo
, which allegedly triggered the disaster
flood
and landslides on Sumatra Island.
He said Tesso Nilo is located in Riau Province so it has nothing to do with the major disasters that occurred in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.
“The problem is with Zulkifli Hasan Tesso Nilo. Tesso Nilo is in Riau Province. Currently Riau Province has not experienced any disasters. But the disaster is Zulkifli Hasan’s fault,” said Zulhas at the 2025 BIG Conference at the Raffles Hotel Jakarta, Monday (8/12).

“Yes, it’s okay, I forgive,” he continued.
Zulhas added that Tesso Nilo has National Park status, so it is impossible for anyone to grant land clearing permits, including him when he was Minister of Forestry for the 2009-1014 period.
He emphasized that no minister would dare to issue a permit to clear land in Tesso Nilo, because he would definitely be imprisoned.
Zulhas also mentioned his interview with actor and environmental activist from the United States, Harrison Ford, who criticized the damage to Tesso Nilo.
“How come the Tesso Nilo is damaged? When the reformation was launched, there were 50 thousand people there now. So what was Zulkifli Hasan’s fault there? said Zulhas.

.I said, that’s the criminal realm, that’s the legal realm.It’s just that I don’t feel comfortable saying that I wasn’t arrested because it’s not my area.When I say that, it’s not allowed,” he said.
The conflict in Tesso Nilo National Park in Riau has become a hot topic of discussion among the public, especially on social media.Tesso Nilo National Park itself is known as the habitat of Sumatran elephants.
Unfortunately, recently conflict has erupted on the land of Tesso Nilo.Complex polemics ranging from forest encroachment, illegal palm oil plantations, economic pressure from the community, to land mafia networks are ongoing problems in Tesso Nilo.
In fact, Tesso Nilo is home to rare animals and harbors biodiversity.This land issue has also been confirmed by the Ministry of Forestry, which confirmed the Tesso Nilo land area as 81,793 hectares (based on SK 6588/Menhut-VII/KUH/2014) since 28 October 2014.
However, to this day this area is subject to conflict because most of the area is controlled by illegal oil palm plantations.National parks should be maintained together, especially since the area contains many protected flora and fauna.
