Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule for around 50 years in 1895. The colonial period only ended after Japan lost World War II in 1945.
Japan then handed over Taiwan to China, which at that time was still called the Republic of China (ROC).At that time, the ROC was involved in a civil war with Communist forces.
The ROC then lost and withdrew to Taiwan. They established a government there, while the Communists established a government in Beijing and called themselves the People’s Republic of China/PRC.
The PRC claims Taiwan as part of its sovereignty to this day.China has on various occasions emphasized that it will defend the island as much as possible if necessary by force.
In recent years, Taiwan has shown that it wants to separate itself from China.
Trump, on that occasion, said the US fully understands “how important the Taiwan issue is to China.”
Apart from discussing Taiwan, the two heads of state also touched on various issues such as Palestine and the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Trump, in the call, also confirmed he would visit China in April next year.Xi meanwhile will visit China in December 2026.
The US actually has hot and cold relations with China. They are often involved in various disputes, especially regarding trade wars and Taiwan.
For Taiwan, the US is their main arms supply partner.
Xi and Trump’s phone conversation comes as China is at odds with Japan over Taiwan.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said an armed attack on Taiwan could be the basis for Japan to deploy troops as part of the concept of collective defense.
China then urged Takaichi to withdraw his statement. However, the PM was reluctant to withdraw this statement.Relations between the two countries are increasingly heating up.
China even banned flights to Japan and banned citizens from watching anime.
Takaichi also spoke with Trump via telephone.
“(We) had a broad exchange of views regarding strengthening the Japan-US alliance and the challenges and issues facing the Indo-Pacific region,” Takaichi told media crew.
