Germany announced that it would send a number of its troops to
Poland
to help with the project to strengthen the country’s eastern border.
This step was taken by the German government amidst increasing European concerns about military threats from Russia.
Poland, a strong supporter of Ukraine in the fight against Russia, has announced plans since May last year to strengthen a long stretch of its borders, which include borders with Belarus and the Russian exclave Kaliningrad.

A spokesman for the German Defense Ministry in Berlin said on Friday (12/12) evening local time that the main task of German troops in Poland was “engineering activities” (
engineering activities
).
“This could include building fortifications, digging trenches, installing barbed wire, or erecting tank barriers,” he explained, as reported

“The support provided by the German army as part of this operation is limited to these engineering activities,” he added, without specifying the exact number of troops involved, giving only a number in the mid double digits (dozens to dozens).
The troops are expected to participate in the project from the second quarter of 2026 to the end of 2027.
The spokesperson stressed that parliamentary approval was not required for the deployment because “there is no immediate danger to soldiers from military conflict.”
The German parliament must approve the deployment of the country’s armed forces abroad, except for certain exceptional cases.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Warsaw has steadfastly supported Kyiv and been a major transit route for weapons supplied by Ukraine’s Western allies.Warsaw has also modernized its army and increased defense spending.
Germany itself is Ukraine’s second-largest supplier of military aid after the United States, and has sent Kyiv a large amount of equipment ranging from air defense systems to armored vehicles.This German step shows increased military cooperation in Eastern NATO.
