Governor of West Sumatra Mahyeldi Ansharullah
canceled his son’s wedding which was scheduled for December 6-7 2025 as a result
flash flood and landslide disasters
which hit a number of areas in the region.
Through his Instagram upload @dailymahyeldi, Monday (1/12), Mahyeldi stated that it was inappropriate to celebrate personal happiness when other people were in trouble and grieving.
“On behalf of Mahyeldi Harneli’s extended family, we would like to convey that our son’s wedding ceremony, which was scheduled to be held on 6 and 7 December 2025, has been canceled amidst the flash floods and landslides which have claimed many lives and forced thousands of residents to flee. We feel it is inappropriate to celebrate happiness when our brothers are struggling and grieving,” said Mahyeldi.

Mahyeldi also emphasized the leader’s mandate in the midst of the disaster that has hit thousands of people since the end of November 2025.
“As a father, of course I want to be present at happy family moments. However, as governor, I have to prioritize trust,” he said.
He also apologized to all the guests for the cancellation, which was a form of respect and empathy for the people who were grieving.
“I express my deepest apologies to my close friends and all the guests. This decision was not an easy one, but this is a form of our respect to the people who are struggling to restore their lives,” he said.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the death toll from floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra had increased to 712 people as of Tuesday (2/12) afternoon.
Based on data displayed on the official BNPB website, the number of missing victims is 507 people in the three affected provinces.
In detail, the number of victims who died in Aceh was 218 people and 227 people missing.
Then in North Sumatra, 301 people died and 163 people disappeared.Then in West Sumatra, 193 people died and 117 people disappeared.
