“Creating, storing and distributing information, materials or goods aimed at opposing the state,” said Vietnam’s public security ministry on Monday (17/11), as quoted
The Straits Times
.
Khoa is the editor-in-chief of the news site
Thoibao.de.
He said on Tuesday (18/11) the government’s attempt to prosecute him was a “freak show” or “farce”.
Khoa also sees his prosecution as an attempt to silence his media which has been blocked in Vietnam.
Vietnam has previously carried out major economic reforms and become more open to social change.
But the ruling Communist Party maintains strict media censorship and leaves no room for criticism.
Censorship and silencing of opposition and government critics is increasingly being encouraged, especially ahead of the five-yearly congress which will take place in January.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese authorities agreed to prosecute Khoa and issued an order for his arrest.
The Vietnamese Ministry said Khoa had a Vietnamese passport. On his social media account, Khoa said he also has German citizenship.
The German Embassy in Hanoi did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
On January 19-25, the Communist Party congress will be held and party leaders will formulate their main strategies and policies.
