US Urges Ukraine to Hand Over Territory and Weapons to Russia

According to sources who did not want to be named, the US has also proposed that Ukraine cut the size of its armed forces.So far, the White House has declined to comment.The US Department of State has also not responded.
A senior Ukrainian official meanwhile told
Reuters
that Kyiv had received “signals” regarding a series of US proposals to end the war.According to him, the proposal was the result of discussions between the US and Russia which did not involve Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote a statement on Telegram calling for effective US leadership to help end the war.However, Zelensky did not mention Washington’s proposal.
“The main thing to stop the bloodshed and achieve lasting peace is that we work together with all partners and that American leadership remains effective and strong,” wrote Zelensky after meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Wednesday (19/11).
Zelensky is currently in Türkiye to talk to Erdogan about the Russia-Ukraine war.He is scheduled to meet with US Army officials in Kyiv on Thursday (20/11).
Zelensky has emphasized that only the US and US President Donald Trump have the ability to end the war.
This kind of discourse on handing over territory would be a major setback for Kyiv, which is cornered by Russia’s achievements in eastern Ukraine.Russian troops currently control around 19 percent of Ukrainian territory and continue to advance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has long demanded that Ukraine not join NATO if it wants the war to stop.Moscow has given no signal that it has abandoned the demands.Ukraine itself has stated that it is not willing to comply.
In an Axios report, a US official familiar with the matter said the US proposal regarding handing over Ukrainian territory could be seen as a return for future US and European security guarantees for Ukraine.
According to him, the area requested to be released is part of eastern Ukraine that is not currently controlled by Kyiv.
Meanwhile, a European diplomat said the US proposal to cut Ukraine’s armed forces looked like a Russian proposal.He said this point was not a serious proposal.
