United States
(US) is the country that borrows or withdraws the most
debt
to
China
.This is known from AidData research.
The US William & Mary University research laboratory said there was a shift in China’s priorities in providing loans.China, which previously focused on providing debt to developing countries, is now starting to increase debt provision to developed countries.
“Among a number of findings, the US has received more than US$200 billion for nearly 2,500 projects and activities that can be found virtually in every state,” wrote AidData on their official website, Tuesday (18/11).

The research states that the US has withdrawn debt from China of US$202 billion during 2000-2023.This amount is equivalent to IDR 3,367 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 16,671 per US dollar).
Russia is in second place with a total debt to China of US$172 billion or IDR 2,867 trillion.Australia is in third place with debt reaching US$130 billion or IDR 2,167 trillion.
So, how much does Indonesia owe to China?
AidData noted that Indonesia owes China US$61 billion or Rp. 1,016 trillion.Indonesia is ranked 9th on the list of countries with the most debt to China.
AidData said that no other country in the world received loans from China compared to the US.
Chinese debt given to the US was received by a number of large companies in the Fortune 500 category, such as Amazon, AT&T, Verizon, Tesla, General Motors, Ford, Boeing, and Disney.
“This is a remarkable finding, considering that the US has warned other countries about the dangers of significant debt accumulation from China in the last decade, and accused China of practicing ‘debt trap diplomacy’,” said AidData Executive Director Brad Parks.
