The government of United States President Donald Trump officially declared the cartel
Venezuela
“Cartel de los Soles” as a terrorist organization and accused the President
Nicolas Maduro
as a member of the organization.
On November 16, the US Department of State stated that the Cartel de los Soles or Cartel of the Sun would be added to the foreign terrorist organizations (FTO).The US accuses the “cartel” of being directly supervised by Maduro himself.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the designation would bring “a whole host of new options” for the US against Venezuela and Maduro’s government.

The cartel’s designation as a terrorist organization follows a number of US military attacks on Venezuelan vessels accused of carrying drugs in the Caribbean and Pacific.
Although it has not provided evidence of Maduro’s direct involvement in drug trafficking, the US insists Maduro is the leader of the Cartel de los Soles.
Last July, national security adviser and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Maduro of being “the leader of a narcotics organization designated Cartel de los Soles” and responsible for “drug trafficking to the United States and Europe.”
But Maduro countered accusing the US of “fabricating new wars and narratives that are specious, vulgar, criminal and completely false. He believes Trump wants to change the political landscape in the Caribbean.
Responding to the latest US move, Venezuela called what the Trump administration was doing a “ridiculous lie” aimed at paving the way for an “illegal” military intervention.
Maduro and his government have always denied involvement in crimes, and have accused the US of seeking regime change with the intention of controlling Venezuela’s natural resources, especially its vast oil reserves.
“They want Venezuela’s oil and gas reserves.Without any reward. They want Venezuelan gold. They want Venezuelan diamonds, iron, bauxite. They want Venezuela’s natural resources,” said Venezuelan Oil Minister Delcy Rodriguez.
Since September, the US has launched a series of airstrikes on what it says are drug-trafficking boats off the coast of Venezuela and Colombia.
The US has also sent several warships, including the nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Gerald R Ford, the world’s largest and most advanced naval aircraft carrier, to the Caribbean Sea in recent weeks.
Trump said he had “almost” decided what he would do in Venezuela, but had not yet announced his decision.
Last week, when asked about the possibility of deploying US troops in Venezuela, Trump replied: “I’m not ruling it out.I’m not ruling anything out.We just need to take care of Venezuela.”
