Netanyahu and other Israeli officials are accused of crimes against humanity under article 77 and genocide under article 76 of the Turkish Criminal Code.
However, the prosecutor’s office stated that the defendants could not be arrested because they were not currently in Türkiye.
The letter was issued at the request of the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office, which stated that Israel’s systematic genocide and crimes against humanity in Gaza caused thousands of people to lose their lives, thousands of others were injured and residential settlements could no longer be used.
The Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office also included the incident of the Israeli troops’ brutal shooting of Hind Rajab who was hit by up to 335 bullets on January 29, 2004.
“Since October 7, the actions have increased every day.”The attack on Al Ahli Baptist Hospital on October 17 claimed 500 lives, on February 29 2024 the Israeli army deliberately destroyed medical equipment, and on March 21 the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital was bombed,” the prosecutor continued.
Apart from indiscriminate attacks on health facilities, Israeli troops also blockaded Gaza so that residents there could not receive humanitarian assistance.
This situation attracted world attention, especially activists who were members of the GSF who sailed to Gaza to dismantle the Israeli blockade and send humanitarian aid.
However, they were attacked by Israeli troops in international waters.
Some of those arrested were Turkish citizens. The activists were detained before being flown to their home country.
Upon arrival in their home country, they undergo medical and psychological examinations and the results are submitted to the prosecutor’s office.
Turkey is also conducting investigations into cases of crimes of torture, aggravated plunder, property damage, deprivation of liberty, and piracy based on articles 12 and 13 of the Turkish Criminal Code, article 15 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Responding to the arrest warrant, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar criticized the Turkish government under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“In Türkiye under Erdogan, the judiciary has long been a tool to silence political rivals and detain journalists, judges and mayors,” said Sa’ar, quoted
