The scuffle initially broke out between two people from the AK and CHP parties. Then, other members of parliament joined in in droves, causing the commotion to spread.
The fight started after ruling AK Party lawmaker Mustafa Varank made remarks targeting Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel during budget discussions at Turkey’s Grand National Assembly.
After Varank criticized Özel regarding the photos taken at the grave of former Tunceli MP Kamer Genç, CHP Fraction Deputy Leader Gökhan Günaydın responded from the podium. He accused the AK Party of deliberately inciting controversy in the middle of budget discussions.
The debate then heated up and developed into exchanging harsh comments regarding the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.Further provocations led to physical confrontations, when members of parliament pushed each other before finally fighting each other.
The commotion lasted for about 10 minutes, with lawmakers pushing and fighting, while security officers and other legislators tried to intervene.Fights even occurred sporadically during breaks in the trial.
The chairman of the Turkish House of Representatives (DPR), Numan Kurtulmus, finally postponed the meeting after the clashes erupted. However, it wasn’t long before the meeting finally continued.
The 2026 Central Government Budget bill was finally passed with a vote of 320 to 249, while the 2024 financial accountability report was approved with a vote of 316 to 247.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan praised the voting results in a post on the X platform.
“I hope that the 2026 Central Government Budget Law, which was passed by Turkey’s Grand National Assembly tonight, will bring goodness to our country, nation and economy,” Erdogan was quoted as saying.
