A green card is a document that certifies the holder as a lawful permanent resident of the US.
Green cards are different from refugee and asylum programs, although refugees must apply for these cards after one year in the US.
When asked which countries were considered “worrying”, the immigration agency pointed to the 19 countries listed in the presidential proclamation last June.
These countries are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
The plan emerged after two National Guard troops were shot near the White House on Thursday.
On Thursday evening, the authorities succeeded in identifying the perpetrator, namely an Afghan citizen, Rahmanullah Lakanwal.
Lakanwal has previously worked with the US government, including the country’s intelligence agency (CIA).He came to the country in 2021 as part of Biden’s “Operation Allies Welcome” after assisting Uncle Sam’s troops in Afghanistan.
He then applied for asylum in 2024, and the Trump administration granted it in April 2025.
Returning to Trump’s tightening of immigration, the US Department of Homeland Security also stated that the government would review all asylum grants to Afghans during the Joe Biden administration.
“As of now, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is suspended indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in an official release.
“The Trump Administration is also reviewing all asylum cases approved under the Biden Administration,” he added.
More than 190,000 Afghans have been resettled in the United States since the US military withdrew from the South Asian country in August 2021.
“We must now re-examine every foreigner entering our country from Afghanistan under Biden,” Trump said a few days ago.
The US, he continued, also needs to take all necessary steps to ensure the expulsion of any foreigner from any country who does not belong here or provide benefits to the country.
Trump also deplored what he described as “20 million unknown and unvetted foreigners” who entered the US during his predecessor’s administration.
“This is a risk to our survival,” he said.
