Reported by Reuters, in an official memorandum released by the US government, this new policy followed the attack on members of the US National Guard in Washington last week.In that incident, an Afghan man has been named as a suspect.
Trump has also stepped up threatening rhetoric against Somalis in recent days, calling them “scum” and saying “we don’t want them in our country”.
The list of countries targeted by Trump’s memorandum includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
The new policy will suspend pending application processes and require all immigrants from the country’s list to undergo a thorough review, including re-interviews if necessary.
Since taking office again in January 2025, Trump has prioritized aggressive enforcement of immigration laws. The Trump administration also often highlights deportation efforts, but is seen as placing less emphasis on efforts to overhaul the illegal immigration system.
