Trump claimed that while he would not legalize marijuana for “recreational medicine” at all, it would make it more readily available for legitimate medical uses such as for cancer and chronic pain sufferers.
“There are people begging me to do this. People who are suffering a lot,” Trump said on Thursday (18/12).
“This reclassification order will make medical research related to marijuana easier, allowing us to study the benefits, potential dangers and future treatments. This will have a positive impact,” Trump claimed, quoted by AFP.
In the US, marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule 1 substance, in the same category as drugs such as heroin. In this group, drugs are considered to have a high potential for abuse.
Meanwhile, Group II substances, which include ketamine and anabolic steroids, are considered to have lower medical value and abuse potential.
The US President cannot unilaterally reclassify a drug. But an Executive Order signed by Trump could direct the Attorney General to speed up the process.
Previously, during Joe Biden’s leadership, the US also pushed for the reclassification of marijuana. However, this effort stalled and was not completed before Trump took office in early 2025.
The US has a series of state-level regulations regarding commercial distribution, recreational possession and personal cultivation of marijuana.
In small amounts, marijuana is legal for recreational use in 24 states as well as the capital Washington DC.
