The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Thursday (27/11) reported that the conversation between Trump and Takaichi was held by telephone on Tuesday (25/11).In that conversation, Trump advised Takaichi not to mess with China regarding Taiwan.
“Trump arranged a telephone conversation with Takaichi and reminded the PM not to provoke Beijing regarding the sovereignty of the island (Taiwan),” the WSJ reported, citing statements by a number of Japanese and American officials.
“The appeal was subtle. Trump also did not urge Takaichi to retract his statement,” continued the WSJ report, as quoted
Channel News Asia
(CNA).
Trump and Takaichi’s conversation took place amidst hot tensions between China and Japan recently.
Japanese government spokesman Minoru Kihara meanwhile denied the WSJ report.Kihara said there was no such request from Trump to Takaichi.
“The article states that Trump asked Takaichi not to provoke the Chinese government. There was no such request,” said Kihara, as quoted by AFP.
Earlier on Monday (24/11), Xi Jinping had already called Trump to emphasize the importance of maintaining world peace.
“China and the US once fought side by side against fascism and militarism and must now work together to secure the outcome of World War II,” Xi told Trump, as quoted by AFP.
“Given what is happening, it is even more important for us to jointly safeguard the victory of World War II,” Xi continued.
China and Japan are in a commotion following Takaichi’s statement on November 7.At that time, Takaichi indicated that Japan could deploy Self-Defense Forces if China attacked Taiwan.
So far, China has viewed Taiwan as part of its territory.Meanwhile, Taiwan wants independence and has repeatedly emphasized that only the Taiwanese people can determine the island’s future.
The Taiwan issue has long been viewed by China as sensitive and non-negotiable.
Beijing has asked Takaichi to withdraw his remarks after causing chaos. However, Takaichi refused, causing China to become even more inflamed.
According to Japanese officials, Trump’s efforts to mediate between China and Japan cannot be separated from the interests of the United States.Trump is said to be trying to maintain the fragile agreement between the US and China on trade.
“The president does not want tensions over Taiwan to jeopardize his agreement with Xi reached last month, which includes China’s promise to buy agricultural products from US farmers affected by the trade war,” the WSJ report said.
Takaichi’s spokesman has so far declined to comment.
