Trump initially voiced his distaste for Somali immigrants in the US.He said the citizens of the East African country were too dependent on the US and did not contribute anything to the United States.
“They don’t contribute anything. Honestly, I don’t want them in our country,” Trump was quoted as saying

.
“Their country is not good for a reason. Your country is bad and we don’t want them in our country,” he said.
Trump’s remarks were not only made to Somali immigrants, but also to Ilhan Omar, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) who comes from Somalia but is a US citizen.
Trump called Omar and her friends “trash” and the country “stinks”, where citizens can only complain without providing benefits.
“These are people who can do nothing but complain. They complain and get nothing from their country… If they come from hell, complain, and just grumble all the time, we can’t accept them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from,” Trump was quoted as saying.

Trump’s statement comes at a time when the US government is increasing immigration enforcement against Somali citizens in Minnesota.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that the Minneapolis-St.Paul will face mass deportation this week. This is where the majority of Somali immigrants in the US live.
According
The New York Times
, this deportation effort will involve a “strike team” consisting of ICE immigration officers and other federal officers of around 100 people.
Somalis have been coming to Minnesota and other US states since the 1990s.They usually come as refugees.
Trump has for years criticized Omar, who migrated from Somalia to the US in 1995. However, the intensity of his attacks increased last week after conservative activist Christopher Rufo accused Somalis of using money from Minnesota programs to finance Al-Shahab, a militant group linked to Al Qaeda that controls parts of Somalia.
Omar meanwhile has responded to Trump’s criticism by saying that Trump’s obsession with her has crossed the line.
“His obsession with me is truly scary. I hope he gets the help he so desperately needs,” Omar wrote on social media on Tuesday.
