In recent weeks, Trump has stated that he will start a land-based anti-drug operation in Venezuela.
The remarks came as the US intensified attacks on ships in the Caribbean accused of smuggling drugs.
Washington accuses Venezuela and its president, Nicolas Maduro, of illegally smuggling narcotics into the US.Maduro denies this and accuses the US of intending to overthrow his government.
On Wednesday (10/12), Trump announced that the US had seized a super-large tanker off the coast of the South American country.
The confiscation infuriated Maduro, who said the US action was “blatant theft” and “international piracy”.
A number of US government sources have said that US anti-drug operations in the Caribbean are just a cover for Washington’s true intentions to remove Maduro from office.
Several anonymous US sources even leaked that the Trump administration is currently drawing up a plan that includes Washington’s actions to fill the power vacuum and stabilize Venezuela if Maduro is successfully overthrown.
