“Tonight, I am proud to announce that we will elevate US-Saudi military cooperation to a higher level by officially designating Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally,” Trump said, as quoted by AFP.
Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) is a designation regulated in US law that provides certain benefits to US partners in the field of defense and security.
Reporting from the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, this designation is a strong symbol of the US’s close relations with partner countries and shows deep respect for the existing friendship.
Although this MNNA status confers privileges in the military and economic sectors, it does not imply any security commitment to the designated state.
The privileges obtained from MNNA status include being able to borrow materials, equipment or supplies for research and testing purposes.Countries with MNNA status can also become locations for storing US war ammunition.
In addition, these partner countries are also permitted to purchase US depleted uranium ammunition.
Currently, there are 19 countries designated by the US as MNNA.These countries are Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Thailand and Tunisia.
In addition, based on the decision of Pub.L. 107-228, the US also designated Taiwan as a territory to be treated as MNNA even though there was no official designation.
