There are more than 200 commodities on the list, ranging from citrus, acai berries, and peppers to cocoa, chemicals used in food production, fertilizer, and even communion wafers.
The new policy takes effect retroactively from Thursday (13/11) midnight, marking a quite sharp change in attitude from Trump.Previously, he repeatedly emphasized that the import tariffs imposed this year would not cause price increases (inflation).
The White House, in a fact sheet regarding the order, said the cuts came after significant progress in US bilateral agreements.Trump decided some types of food could be exempt from tariffs because they are not grown or processed in the US.
Based on US food data, the price of ground beef rose 13 percent so that steaks were sold 17 percent more expensive than last year,
Banana prices rose about 7 percent, tomatoes 1 percent, while overall costs for food consumed at home rose 2.7 percent in September.
Trump also said he would continue plans to provide payments of US$2,000 or the equivalent of Rp. 33.4 million (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 16,712 per US dollar) to low to middle income residents, the funds for which would come from tariff revenues next year.
The policy of cutting tariffs comes after the Democratic Party won victories in a number of regional elections in Virginia, New Jersey and New York City, where the issue of affordability, especially of foodstuffs, was a major concern for voters.
Trump’s tariff cuts were also praised by many industry groups, while some expressed disappointment that their products were not included in the tariff exemption list.
“Today’s action will help consumers, who will hopefully be able to enjoy a more affordable cup of morning coffee, as well as US manufacturers, who widely use this product in their supply chains and production lines,” said FMI Food Industry Association President Leslie Sarasin.
Trump has changed the global trading system by imposing a basic tariff of 10 percent on imports from each country, then adding additional special import duties whose amounts vary in each state.
