Japan
to be alert and continue to monitor the situation after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked Aomori Prefecture, Monday (8/12) evening.
“The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has issued an appeal to Indonesian citizens in Japan to continue to monitor the situation and follow instructions given by the official Japanese authorities, including studying evacuation routes, preparing emergency bags, preparing important documents and sufficient cash,” said a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, Tuesday (9/12).

The Cabinet Office and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) are said to have issued an alert regarding the possibility of aftershocks.At the same time, the Task Force at the Crisis Management Center at the Japanese PM’s office has been activated.
The statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy also followed a warning from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) regarding the possibility of a large earthquake or megaquake following Monday night’s earthquake.
This megaquake threat warning is valid for the next few days.
“Based on global earthquake statistics, there is a possibility of an earthquake measuring magnitude 8 or more occurring as an aftershock along the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench off Hokkaido. It is unclear whether a large earthquake will actually occur, but everyone should take precautions,” read a statement from the spokesperson for the Japanese Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office for Disaster Response, Marikubo Tsukasa, as quoted by the broadcaster.

The JMA reported such a large earthquake could trigger tsunami waves along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Chiba Prefecture.
Residents are asked to check evacuation routes, prepare emergency bags, tie up furniture at home, and ensure stocks of food, water and portable toilets.
Those who live on the coast are asked to remain alert for the next week even though there are no evacuation recommendations yet.
This is the first warning since the category was introduced in 2022.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 rocked the northeastern region of Japan on Monday (8/12) evening.The earthquake was detected off the coast of Misawa, Aomori Prefecture, at 23.15 local time, at a depth of 44 kilometers.
A tsunami warning was issued for Iwate Prefecture as well as parts of Hokkaido and Aomori.Now, the tsunami warning has been lifted and replaced with tsunami advisories.
According to authorities, at least 10 people were injured by the earthquake.One victim was reported to be in serious condition.
Based on records from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, no Indonesian citizens were victims of the earthquake.The number of Indonesian citizens in Aomori itself is estimated to be around 969 people.
“Until now, Tuesday, December 9 2025, at 08.30 JST, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens becoming victims,” said the statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo.
