Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in comments broadcast on Wednesday (26/11), negotiations were still ongoing and a serious process.
US President Donald Trump said there was progress and Moscow was making concessions despite the war, which later showed Russian troops were only moving “in one direction.”
While appreciating US efforts, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters on Wednesday there was “no room for concessions or changes in our stance on the main points.”
Meanwhile, senior researcher at the Center for a New American Security, Jim Townsend, told
Al Jazeera
Russia may think that Trump is impatient and lacks focus, so it will use tactics to slow down the process to avoid concessions.
“This situation could become chaotic. Russia doesn’t feel any pressure. They believe they can win if they persist long enough,” said Townsend, as quoted by

.
Previously, Trump proposed a 28-point plan that was leaked last week and would send lead negotiator Steve Witkoff to Moscow in the near future.
But Ukraine and its European allies expressed concern that the US proposal supports some of Russia’s demands, such as Ukraine giving up additional territory, cutting military power and not allowing it to join NATO.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday (25/11) he was willing to continue with the US-backed framework for ending the war and discussed points of contention with Trump.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said ending the Ukraine war was “not a simple matter” and he stressed, “We are getting closer to a deal.”
“I thought it would be an easy [deal], but we are making progress,” Trump said.
The European Union’s top foreign affairs official, Kaja Kallas, said on Wednesday (26/11) there was no sign at all that Russia was ready for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
He believes additional sanctions on Moscow are needed along with increased support for Kyiv.
He also stressed that any peace deal must include concrete concessions from Russia.
“The heart of any deal must be about what Russia is doing,” he said, and Europe must guarantee Moscow “will not attack again.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that while Europe hopes for a quick end to the war, “a negotiated agreement by the great powers without Ukrainian and European agreement will not lead to a durable peace.”
“Europe is not the object of a game, but actors fighting for interests and values,” Merz told lawmakers in Berlin.
