This time the coup attempt took place in
Benin
, a country in West Africa.On Sunday (7/12), a group of soldiers appeared on state television and announced the overthrow of the President of Benin, Patrice Talon.
Talon had previously ruled the country since 2016.The soldiers declared themselves the ‘Military Committee for Reform’ (CMR).

“Mr Patrice Talon was removed from his position as president of the republic,” said a statement on state television.

, they said Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri had been appointed President of the Military Committee.
This announcement follows two coups in Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in recent months.Benin borders to the north with Niger and Burkina Faso, which have also experienced military takeovers.
On the other hand, Talon supporters stated that those who announced the coup were only a small group.Talon remained safe, and military loyal to the government took control.
“This is a small group of people just controlling the television. The regular army is taking control. The city and country are completely safe,” a Talon spokesman told

Meanwhile, a source in the Benin military stated that the situation was ‘under control’, and the coup attempt failed to take over Talon’s residence or the presidential office.
Based on monitoring by foreign journalists in Cotonou–Benin’s capital–soldiers were seen blocking access to state television stations and the presidential office.
Access points to a number of important areas–including districts where international institutions are based–in Cotonou were also blocked by the army.
However, so far there has been no visible military presence at the airport or other areas in the capital city of Benin.Apart from that, residents are still carrying out their activities as usual.
On the one hand, the French Embassy in Benin via account X stated ‘gunshots were heard in Guezo Camp, near the president’s official residence’.
For security reasons, they appealed to French citizens to stay indoors for safety.
