Thailand and Cambodia returned to war after a Bangkok soldier was killed and four soldiers were injured in a gunfight on the border at dawn Monday (8/12).
Thailand claims Cambodia opened fire first. However, Cambodia denied this and accused Thailand of carrying out the first attack.
The two parties themselves have been arguing for several days.
Following the soldier’s death, Thailand on Monday deployed F-16 fighter jets to attack Cambodian military infrastructure on the border.Cambodia meanwhile reportedly launched a BM-21 rocket into the Thai residential area of Buri Ram.
A total of 438,000 civilians in five border provinces have currently been evacuated by the Thai government.Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of civilians on the Cambodian side have also been moved to safe locations.
According to the Thai military, 18 soldiers have been injured so far.Meanwhile, according to Cambodia, nine of their civilians were injured due to the conflict.
Thailand and Cambodia are currently in a ceasefire. However, both countries accused each other of violating an agreement brokered by United States President Donald Trump.
The first Thai-Cambodian war erupted last July for five days.Bangkok-Phnom Penh then signed a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur in October after being urged by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as chairman of ASEAN this year.
At least 48 people died and around 300,000 people were displaced as a result of the Thailand-Cambodia war in July.
