“We are collecting evidence through photos and videos which show that Cambodia uses these sites as forts or weapons warehouses in their operations,” said Richa in a press conference, Thursday (11/12), as quoted
The Thai National
.
Richa emphasized that archaeological sites should not be attacked in battle. However, if these historical sites were used in military operations intended to attack Thailand and endanger soldiers and civilians, Bangkok would certainly “defend itself”.
“When we found that Cambodia was using these areas as military installations, weapons warehouses, command posts, or important equipment storage facilities, and they used them to attack us, causing losses to our personnel and impacting civilians, our principle was to defend ourselves,” he said.
Richa said such defensive measures were permissible under international law.He believes the international community will understand Thailand’s position.
This evidence collection was carried out in line with Bangkok’s anticipation that Phnom Penh would try to accuse Thailand of destroying cultural heritage sites on the border of the two countries.
UNESCO had previously warned Cambodia and Thailand not to damage the world heritage site of Preah Vihear Temple, which was one of the flashpoints of the fighting.
UNESCO warns that fighting in this historic area could endanger the existence of the temple. The agency also urged both sides to protect cultural heritage on the border and comply with obligations under international law.
War between Thailand and Cambodia broke out again on Monday (8/12) after Thailand claimed that a soldier was killed in a shootout on the border.
Thailand deployed fighter jets to attack Cambodian military installations, to which Cambodia responded by firing BM-21 rockets, including at civilian settlements.
As of Wednesday (10/12) afternoon, nine Thai soldiers had died as a result of the war.More than 120 people were also injured.
Meanwhile, there were three civilian victims in Thailand.
On the Cambodian side, 10 civilians died as a result of the war as of Wednesday. The number of injured reached 60 people.
