Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn previously passed a decree as announced in the Royal Gazette on Friday, paving the way for accelerated elections in accordance with the law, namely within the next 45 to 60 days.
Thai politics fell into chaos when the border conflict with Cambodia erupted again. The conflict, which has been going on for four days, has killed 20 people and injured 200 others.
Anutin told reporters on Wednesday that the dissolution of parliament would have no impact on Thai military operations along the border.Gunfire has occurred at more than a dozen locations on the border, some of which involved heavy artillery fire.
“I am returning power to the people,” Anutin said on social media on Thursday evening.
Anutin is Thailand’s third PM since August 2023 when the country experienced political turmoil.Political instability is taking its toll on Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, which is grappling with US tariffs, high household debt and weak purchasing power.
Anutin had said he would dissolve parliament at the end of January with elections to be held in April. However, his announcement to immediately dissolve parliament this year will speed up the election timetable.
He came to power after pulling his party, the Bhumjaithai Party, out of the governing coalition and gaining support from the People’s Party which put forward a number of demands, including a referendum on constitutional amendments as part of the deal.
However, the People’s Party’s demands could not be fulfilled.
“When the People’s Party didn’t get what they wanted, they said they would submit a motion of no confidence and asked the PM to immediately dissolve parliament,” Siripong said.
