A teenager was killed by a lioness at one of Joao Pessoa City’s zoos,
Brazil
, on Sunday (30/11) local time.

The 19 year old teenager, Gerson de Melo Machado, was determined to climb a six meter high wall and fence, then climb down into the lion’s enclosure through a tree.
One of the female lions in the cage immediately pounced on him until he died.
Machado, who is said to have serious mental health problems, previously dreamed of becoming a lion tamer.
Joao Pessoa Municipality stated that Machado “deliberately entered the lioness enclosure” at the Arruda Camara Zoo Botanical Garden on Sunday (30/11) morning.
The incident was also recorded on a cell phone video by one of the visitors which later went viral on social media.
The female lion named Leona, who was sleeping on the grass in the cage, looked shocked and was immediately disturbed when Machado came down the tree into her territory.
Leona went straight to the tree then pounced and knocked Machado to the ground.The lion then dragged him into the bushes in the cage.
Machado briefly stood in the bushes then disappeared from view among the swaying bushes.Suddenly, the visitors who witnessed the incident screamed hysterically in fear.
“The lion caught him! The lion caught him! Oh my God!”that was the scream of one of the visitors which was recorded on video.
Head of the Joao Pessoa Institute of Legal Medicine, Flavio Fabres told

that Machado’s identity had been identified through his fingerprints.
He said Machado’s cause of death was “severe bleeding due to injury to the jugular vein.”
The zoo was immediately closed temporarily and state environmental authorities carried out an inspection at the scene.
Zoo veterinarian Thiago Nery said there were no problems with enclosure safety standards and said the incident was “completely unexpected.”
The zoo said that “euthanasia was never considered” for Leona, who “did not display aggressive behavior outside the context of the incident.”
The government said Machado’s actions in which he died were a “possible suicide attempt.”
