Apart from killing three people, the attack also injured three US soldiers. The three soldiers are now in good condition.
“We express our condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of the United States, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Al Shaibani said in a statement.
On Saturday, attacks occurred in the city of Palmyra in the Homs countryside as Syrian and US security forces carried out joint patrols in the area.
SANA reported that a gunman opened fire on troops, killing two US soldiers and a translator.Three US soldiers and two Syrian security personnel were also injured.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to avenge the attack that killed his citizens.
“This is an ISIS attack on the US and Syria, in very dangerous Syrian territory, which is not completely controlled by them. Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa is very angry and disturbed by this attack. There will be very serious retaliation,” Trump said on Truth Social.
This is the first attack on the US since Al Sharaa overthrew the Bashar Al Assad regime in Syria late last year.
According to a Pentagon official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, the attack “occurred in an area not controlled by the Syrian President.”
ISIS seized large swaths of Syria and Iraq in 2014 during the Syrian civil war, before being territorially defeated in the country five years later.
However, its fighters still maintain their presence, especially in desert areas.
US troops are meanwhile stationed in Kurdish-held areas of northeastern Syria as well as in Al Tanf near the border with Jordan.
