Elysium is primarily a social commentary that explores political and sociological themes, such as immigration, overpopulation, transhumanism, the justice system, technology, and social class issues.

In 2154, Earth is overpopulated, diseased, and polluted.The planet’s citizens live in poverty.Meanwhile, the rich and powerful live on Elysium, a space station orbiting just outside Earth’s atmosphere.
Spider (Wagner Moura), a hacker living on Earth.He runs three shuttle flights to Elysium smuggling people to use Med-Bays, devices that can cure any disease or condition.
Elysium Secretary of Defense Delacourt (Jodie Foster) shoots down two spaceships in outer space, killing everyone on board, and everyone on the shuttle that reaches Elysium is captured and deported.

Elysium President Patel (Faran Tahir) reprimands Delacourt for his actions, threatening dismissal for similar actions again.In retaliation, Delacourt offers Armadyne Corp CEO John Carlyle (William Fichtner) a lifetime defense contract.
This was done in exchange for a program that would allow Delacourt to stage a coup and install himself as president.Carlyle then wrote the program and stored it in his brain.
On Earth, Max Da Costa (Matt Damon) is a parolee working for Armadyne Corp.
He was working as a laborer when he was accidentally exposed to a lethal dose of radiation.Max was given medication and told he had five days to live.
Max and his friend Julio (Diego Luna) approach Spider and make a deal: If Max can steal information for Spider from the citizens of Elysium, he will give Max a shuttle ride to Elysium so he can use the Med-Bay to heal.
Elysium was written and directed by Neill Blomkamp who also directed District 9 (2009), Chappie (2015), Demonic (2021) and Gran Turismo (2023).
