The statement signals Switzerland’s openness to the possibility of banning social media for children and teenagers.
Baume-Schneider told the newspaper
SonntagsBlick
that Switzerland needs to review Australia’s steps which have previously banned the use of social media for children under the age of 16.
“The debate in Australia and the European Union is very important. The debate must also be held in Switzerland. I am open to a ban on social media,” Baume-Schneider was quoted as saying

The politician from the center-left Social Democratic Party emphasized that “we must protect children better.”
He emphasized the need for authorities to examine appropriate forms of restrictions, ranging from prohibiting children’s use of social media, limiting dangerous content, to dealing with algorithms that exploit the vulnerabilities of young people.
According to Baume-Schneider, in-depth discussions will begin next year with the support of a special report.
“We must also not forget the social media platforms themselves: they must be responsible for what children and young people consume,” said Baume-Schneider.
This plan emerged from the government after the parliament of the Swiss canton of Friborg decided to ban children from using mobile phones at school until the age of around 15 years.
This policy is the latest step at the local level in Switzerland to limit the use of devices in school environments.
Meanwhile, the policy of banning children from using social media in Australia has received widespread support from parents and child welfare groups, but has also drawn criticism from big tech companies and freedom of expression advocates.
