“The grave was opened, given light by Allah, and guarded by angels,” said the prayer leader in the funeral procession, while stumbling because of tears.

The victim’s uncle, Jemmy Yunianto (44), expressed his gratitude to all those who had helped so that Reno’s body could be buried properly.
“Until today’s funeral, everything went smoothly without any obstacles whatsoever. Maybe thanks to prayers from friends, prayers from Reno’s friends and even colleagues from the media too,” said Jemmy.
On that occasion, Jemmy also expressed his appreciation to the police who had been monitoring Reno’s disappearance since August until he was finally found.
“I am a representative of the family. I am an uncle from Reno. I would like to say a big thank you to the police institution which has overseen the case of my nephew’s disappearance from August until he was found, until he was buried until today,” he said.
Not only that, Jemmy said that the family also stated that they had graciously accepted Reno’s departure.
“I have accepted and given Reno permission to go home. Hopefully Reno will be placed next to God Almighty,” concluded Jemmy.
A number of representatives of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) and the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation-Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI-LBH) Surabaya were also present at Reno’s funeral procession.
KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya, in his statement, said that the police had to prove their allegations that Reno and another victim, Muhammad Farhan Hamid, were victims of building arson. This, said Dimas, must be followed up with comprehensive disclosure until there is a fair prosecution.
“The police must not stop at just concluding the identification of the victim, but must ensure that there is an investigation and law enforcement process that is transparent, accountable and supports the victim’s family,” said Dimas.
Dimas also said that the police must also carry out a thorough evaluation of the way state officials handle actions or demonstrations. If not, then similar events have the potential to continue to repeat themselves.According to him, the cases of Farhan and Reno are proof of the state’s failure to protect citizens who voice their opinions.
“Currently the family is grieving over the findings, what is certain is that the police should not only stop at the identification stage, but immediately investigate thoroughly who is responsible. The family hopes that justice for Farhan and Reno will truly be served through an open and impartial legal process,” he said.
Dimas said that KontraS will continue to oversee this process and ensure that the rights of the victims’ families are fulfilled, as well as pressuring the state to carry out a thorough evaluation of the actions of the authorities in handling the action so that there is a guarantee of freedom of expression and a guarantee of a sense of security in the future.
