The video then shows a bleary-eyed Kara blowing out birthday candles in a dark room, hoping for better days ahead.
“Age 23 will be the best year,” Kara muttered to Krypto.”Let’s be honest, darling. It’s not a very high standard to achieve.”
From there, the trailer shows Supergirl wandering around a series of rundown intergalactic colonies inhabited by suspicious humanoid aliens, evoking the chaotic and realistic aesthetic of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films.

The teaser trailer also shows a glimpse of Jason Momoa’s first appearance as Lobo, a brilliant casting choice that Gunn said he had been considering since the beginning of his tenure at DC Studios.
The anti-hero who loves smoking cigars and riding motorbikes is expected to play the main role in the film.
The clip closes with Kara explaining the differences between herself and Superman by saying, “He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.”
The teaser trailer was released to the public after being screened privately at a preview party held by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, directors Craig Gillespie and Milly Alcock. They had time to dissect the video.
Although it is still unclear what exactly makes Kara so sad, director Craig Gillespie has hinted that Kara’s inner turmoil will be the center of this film.
“This is really an anti-hero story,” said Gillespie, as reported by Variety, Thursday (11/12).”He has a lot of baggage and a lot of demons haunting him, which is very different from where Superman is today.”
Gunn said he’s excited fans will see the “punk” direction Alcock’s character is taking. He admitted that Alcock had already had in mind the role of Supergirl even before his deal with DC was completed.
“‘You know who would be great as Supergirl?'” Gunn recalled asking Safran.”‘The little girl from the House of the Dragon. I think she really has something special.'”
“Often female superheroes are so perfect,” explains Gunn.”He’s not like that at all. He’s very imperfect, like male superheroes who have always been allowed to be imperfect.”
Gillespie (Cruella) is directing from a script written by Ana Nogueira, who also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Wonder Woman reboot. The film is based on the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King.
Alcock is accompanied by Matthias Schoenaerts who plays the main villain, Krem from Yellow Hills, then David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Supergirl’s parents.
There’s also Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll who recruits Supergirl to bring Krem to justice for her father’s murder, and Krypto the Super Dog will return once again.
Supergirl will be released June 26, 2026 in theaters.
