Prosecutors said the mayor, who has served four terms, asked a businessman to pay 33 million won (around IDR 380 million) in five payments to fund the survey.
In the South Korean constitution, this action is illegal and is considered a violation of the Political Funds Law.
The 64-year-old politician is even predicted to be one of the figures who has the potential to run as a presidential candidate.
After first being elected mayor in 2006, Se-hoon returned to office in 2021 after his successor, Park Won-soon, died by suicide.
He also tops the latest polls for next year’s local elections.
This competition is considered to be the basis for running as a presidential candidate if he succeeds in obtaining another term in office.
Based on South Korean election rules, if Se-hoon is proven guilty he will no longer be eligible to run in the presidential election.
