The relationship between sleep and physical activity
Sleep and physical activity are both crucial for health.Various previous studies have shown that regular exercise at moderate intensity can improve the quality and duration of sleep. On the other hand, a sedentary lifestyle or minimal movement is often associated with poor sleep.

, scientists suspect there is a two-way relationship, namely that physical activity supports better sleep, while lack of sleep can reduce physical performance and the desire to move. However, the results of research based on daily monitoring so far still show mixed findings.
This research was conducted by a team from Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. They collected observational data from more than 70 thousand adults during the period January 2020 to September 2023.
The participants used a sleep sensor placed under the mattress to measure sleep duration and quality, as well as a smartwatch to record the number of daily steps.Researchers then examined the relationship between the quality of a night’s sleep and physical activity levels the following day.
As a result, only a small percentage of participants consistently met recommendations for sleep and physical activity at the same time.About 12.9 percent of adults regularly sleep seven to nine hours per night and take more than 8,000 steps per day.
Interestingly, sleep has been shown to have a greater influence on physical activity than vice versa.Participants tended to be more active, characterized by a greater number of steps, after sleeping around six to seven hours, not after sleeping too short or too long.
Better sleep quality, such as fewer awakenings during the night, is also associated with higher physical activity the next day.
In contrast, the number of daily steps had only a small impact on the duration and quality of the following night’s sleep. This means that moving a lot during the day does not always guarantee better sleep at night.
For many adults, balancing sleep and exercise can often be difficult. This study suggests that improving sleep, especially its quality, could be the key to making the body more active the next day.
These findings also help explain why some people who exercise regularly still experience sleep disturbances.Focusing on healthy sleep habits, such as keeping your bedroom cool and dark and limiting screen use before bed, can be important steps to support an active lifestyle.
