This friendship tunnel connects people who park in the basement of the Istiqlal Mosque to get to the Cathedral Church.
“Currently, because it has become a basement with quite a large capacity, almost 700 to 800 cars, and then supported again by the tunnel connecting Istiqlal and the Cathedral, it really helps us,” said Susyana on Wednesday (24/12).
“For example, today, Christmas Eve 24 and tomorrow [25 December 2025], the tunnel will be open from morning to evening. This is to help people park at the Istiqlal Mosque and cross safely and comfortably so they can reach the Cathedral and attend Mass,” he continued.
Susyana said the tunnel was not yet open to the public, only specifically for the 2025 Christmas series. However, Susyana said the tunnel could still be visited by appointment.
The tunnel will only be opened to the public after Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) have been prepared.
“By providing a letter to the community, for example to visit the tunnel, that is possible. While we are waiting, we are preparing an SOP, so that when the SOP has been finalized, we can open it to the public,” he said.
The Silaturahmi Tunnel was built during the administration of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo in 2020 and was completed in 2021. This tunnel was built 34 meters long, 5 meters wide and 8 meters high, with a budget of IDR 39 billion.
President Prabowo Subianto has inaugurated the opening of the Silaturahim Tunnel on December 12 2024.
